EXPLORE THE ORGANISATION

START A CAMPUS COMMUNITY

Student Branch or Student Branch Chapter?

A Student Branch brings IEEE students together across your university. A Student Branch Chapter sits within that branch and focuses on the technical interests of an IEEE Society or Council.

Set up a Student Branch

Start here if your university does not have an IEEE Student Branch.

  1. Bring students together. You need 12 active IEEE Student or Graduate Student Members at your institution. An eligible student organiser leads the petition and serves as interim chair.
  2. Arrange university support. Secure endorsements from a department head, a faculty counselor, and two other faculty members. The counselor and faculty endorsers must be active IEEE members at Graduate Student grade or higher, teaching in IEEE fields of interest.
  3. Start the online petition. Select Student Branch in the IEEE petition system, then follow the endorsement, member signature, and approval steps.

Set up a Student Branch Chapter

Start here for a technical community within an active Student Branch.

  1. Choose your technical focus. Your institution must already have an active Student Branch. Identify the IEEE Society or Council your chapter will belong to.
  2. Gather members and an advisor. You need 6 active IEEE Student or Graduate Student Members at your institution who also belong to the relevant Society or Council. The student organiser must belong too. Your faculty chapter advisor needs that membership and active IEEE membership at Graduate Student grade or higher.
  3. Submit a chapter petition. Select Student Branch Chapter. Your branch counselor and chapter advisor endorse it, followed by member signatures and IEEE approvals.

Both petitions use the same IEEE portal and require an IEEE account. Review the linked requirements before applying.

Running your chapter

Read the Region 8 chapter guide

Keep your chapter active through technical events, shared leadership, and close connections with your Student Branch and IEEE Society or Council.

Keep your chapter active

  • Maintain at least 5 IEEE Student or Graduate Student Members.
  • Hold at least 2 technical meetings each year and report them in vTools Events.
  • Maintain activity acceptable to your Society President, Region Director, and Region Student Activities Chair.

The 6-member requirement above is for forming a chapter; the 5-member minimum applies to maintaining it.

Lead with your Student Branch

The branch Executive Committee oversees chapter management. Chapter members elect their chair and other officers under the branch constitution; the chapter chair also sits on the branch Executive Committee.

Coordinate plans with the branch chair, advisor, and other chapters. Tell all branch members about chapter meetings.

Plan activities and build connections

Hold a committee meeting to agree on roles, meeting dates, and an activity plan. Share the plan with your branch Executive Committee.

Organise technical workshops, talks, and Society-related activities. Work with chapters at other universities and your Section’s student activities team. Ask your Society about programmes, speakers, and funding opportunities.

Report, recruit, and hand over

Record attendance, report events in vTools, and share your chapter’s work. Recruit new members and plan officer elections alongside your branch where practical.

Report new officers in vTools and share activity reports with your branch Executive Committee and Society according to their requirements.

Tools for chapter officers

OU Analytics provides membership data to authorised volunteers, including Student Branch and Student Branch Chapter chairs.
